Holly Caplan has been in the medical device industry since 1997.  She learned soon into her career that prospering in the industry required adopting group values of the “dick clique” and membership in that clique would come with a battle – a battle to preserve personal and professional identity.

HOLLY'S STORY...

I was born and raised in Louisiana. Born in New Orleans, and raised in Baton Rouge. Both great cities, each with so much to offer. Mardi Gras, LSU football, Saints football, Cajun food, music and wonderful southern hospitality. Although I’ve been in Texas for 23 years I still consider Louisiana my home.

In 1994 I got a sales rep position selling long distance services business to business. I thought it was the best job ever. This where I cut my teeth and learned to be aggressive. This role gave me the foundation to eventually find my way into the medical device industry, which is where I have spent the majority of my career.

The first part of my career in medical device was spent in sales, which was a blast. I was surrounded by young professionals who wanted to succeed and set the world on fire. After some time in sales I decided that I wanted to explore something different, so I earned a leadership role and became a manager. This is where it started to get real for me. Management is where I really experienced the male component of my career. I was the only woman in management for years. No one could have told me what to expect, because I don’t think anyone really knew. I went in naively thinking that certainly the old tired mores of men vs women had passed us by. Not so.

I went on to become successful, won top awards and poured my heart and soul into my team, but it was a tough road. I learned the behaviors of my male colleagues and engaged in the same for my own survival. I became unemotional, impatient, insensitive and incredibly competitive. I became a DICK.

My hope is that the topics on this website and content of my book will reach each of you and help you find your way to success and stay true to yourself along the way.
